Engage

Politics is no longer for those on the higher echelons. It is for all and sundry to engage with. Politics can be exciting and it is what drives the events of the world.

Let's keep a keen eye on it as we will have to measure the impact on God's people. At its basics politics is the process of making decisions. Politics derives from the Greek word politikos, meaning 'of, for, or relating to citizens'. Woah, really, I thought it would be much more complicated than that.

Well, politics can become complicated when it’s applied to governments and large groups of people. But fundamentally, we are all engaging in politics all the time. Anytime you make a decision that impacts more than just yourself, you bet it! Politics.

But I hear you asking what is the relevance to believers. Well let’s look at two well-known scriptures:

Romans 13: 1 ‘Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God’. 1 Timothy 2: 1-2 ‘Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence’. These scriptures necessitate citizens to be conscious of the political atmosphere in which they conduct their activities in. Ignorance on current affairs is no longer an excuse in the information age. Information is so accessible that I can check what is happening around the world without leaving my house.

This may seem like an obvious point to make, as it is hard to believe that people can still claim ignorance with immediate access to news concerning the events happening in the world, nevertheless, people still remain unenlightened. But politics has piqued the interest of people like myself who probably looked at politics as something to baulk at.

As a social worker, the industry that I work in is heavily influenced by the laws enacted by Parliament. To the point that my union has called for us workers to give our views to Government regarding an upcoming Bill going through both Chambers of Parliament.

The Lord directs us to subject our soul (mind, will and emotions) to the governing authorities. However, this remains the case unless the governing authorities legislate laws that are contrary to His Theonomic laws. Thus, how would any of us know what laws are contrary to God’s will unless we purposely choose to remain informed.

If you remain uninformed with the laws that are impacting us daily. Then how can we head Paul’s exhortation in Timothy to pray and intercede for the men and women that are in authority and govern the land which we find ourselves in.

If God wants us to be cognisant of the political affairs of man-made kingdoms, how much more of His Kingdom that we have been translated and called to participate our efforts in governance. The Ekklesia is a political domain. It is a place where citizens get involved and collaborate in decision making. All citizens must be involved thus all citizens cannot claim ignorance as that leads to foolishness and the undermining of the mandate given to man in Eden.

Hosea 4:6 ‘My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children’.
